This is a time-saving, inexpensive and easy to administer screening tool for physical performance, integrating information on multiple domains, such as gait speed, balance and strength. One of the tests used to objectify physical performance is the Timed Up & Go test. Functional tests can integrate known and unrecognized disturbances in multiple organ systems, such as heart, lungs, circulatory and musculoskeletal systems. Physical performance and functioning appear to be a proxy for the health status in older adults. However, data on functional capacity in older adults undergoing oncologic surgery are scarce.īefore studying the effects of exercise as part of prehabilitation on long term survival in older adults going for oncologic surgery, it is essential to be informed on baseline physical functioning and long-term survival in these patients. Previous studies suggest that preoperative exercise may have beneficial effects on length of hospital stay, functional recovery and postoperative complications. Prehabilitation consists mainly of endurance and resistance exercises. ![]() To improve postoperative outcomes in this group of patients, multiple interventions have been developed: prehabilitation is intended to enhance the functional capacity prior to surgery, enabling to withstand stressful events like surgery. ![]() Predicting which patient is at risk for postoperative adverse outcomes remains difficult and thus the management of older adults with solid cancer is challenging. Whilst older adults considered fit for surgery might do as well as younger patients, vulnerable or frail patients are at an increased risk of adverse postoperative outcomes. However, the ability to withstand major stressors like surgery varies greatly in the geriatric population undergoing oncologic surgery. For many of these solid types of cancer, surgery remains the most efficient treatment. Cancer is a disease of ageing, and solid types of cancer predominantly affect the aged. The global burden of cancer is rapidly increasing, the number of new cancer cases among older adults is expected to double by 2035 compared to 2012. The PREOP study was registered with the Dutch trial registry at NL1497 () and in the United Kingdom register (Research Ethics Committee reference 10/H1008/59). The PICNIC studies are registered in the Dutch Clinical Trial database at NL4219 () and NL4441 (). It requires further investigation whether an impaired TUG can be reversed and thus improve long-term outcomes. ![]() ConclusionsĪn impaired TUG is associated with increased 5-year mortality in older adults undergoing surgery for solid tumors. The TUG was not a significant predictor of 30-day major complications (aOR 1.46, 95% CI 0.70-3.06). An impaired TUG was an independent predictor of increased 5-year mortality (aHR 1.43, 95% CI 1.02-2.02). Five-year survival proportions were 0.56 and 0.49 for patients with normal TUG and impaired TUG respectively. Mean age was 75 years (SD 5.98), in 123 (23.3%) patients, the TUG was impaired. In total, 528 patients were included into analysis. Hazard ratios (aHRs) and Odds ratios (aOR) were adjusted for literature-based and clinically relevant variables, and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated using multivariable models. Cox- and logistic regression analysis were used for survival and complications respectively. Survival proportions were estimated using Kaplan-Meier curves. Primary endpoint was 5-year survival, secondary endpoint was 30-day major complications. The TUG was administered 2 weeks before surgery, a score of ≥12 seconds was considered to be impaired. Patients aged ≥65 years undergoing surgery for solid tumors in three prospective cohort studies, ‘PICNIC’, ‘PICNIC B-HAPPY’ and ‘PREOP’, were included. The objective of this study is to investigate the association between physical performance and long term outcomes. In older adults undergoing oncologic surgery, an impaired TUG has been associated with higher rates of postoperative complications and increased short term mortality. The Timed Up and Go test is an easy-to-administer tool measuring physical performance. Physical performance tests are a reflection of health in older adults. ![]() But a more traditional recording engineer working with recorded audio will likely never use it. Pro Tools, on the other hand, uses multiple windows and offers deep (but far from streamlined) levels of editing tools.īut really, these interface differences simply undergird the big difference: Ableton is more for MIDI and samples, and Pro Tools is more for recording, mixing and editing with a focus on waveform audio.Ībleton Live’s Session View is unique and may offer serious value to electronic and hip-hop musicians and anyone else who works heavily with samples and loops. For example, Ableton Live fits most of what you need into a single window and is pretty streamlined. We could dive into the nitty gritty of how different the interfaces are. And Pro Tools allows users to work in MIDI - just nowhere near as well as Ableton. Ableton can record and edit waveforms- but nowhere near as effectively. Those focuses are just so different, and they practically define which program people choose. It’s also frequently used as a live performance tool, handling the backing tracks for whatever instrumental or vocal efforts a performer produces on stage. It’s also excellent for recording and editing dialog for podcasts or voiceovers.Ībleton Live, on the other hand, is a powerful MIDI-focused DAW suitable for advanced MIDI work, including with digital synths and VSTs. It’s a high-end DAW that’s the industry standard for in-studio recording work. Pro Tools is unashamedly focused on audio waveform recording, mixing and editing, plus video features. The same is true with Protools vs Ableton Live, but the difference in focus is much greater - so much so that you might actually use both programs for different reasons. In our comparison of Pro Tools and Logic Pro X, we said that the programs do most of the same stuff, but that there’s a big difference in focus between the two. Truth be told, there are more differences than similarities in the Pro Tools vs Ableton discussion. Similaritiesīoth programs equip you with an impressive toolset to do a wide range of audio tasks, from tracking and editing vocals and instrumentals to working with MIDI, samples and instrument packs.īoth Ableton and Pro Tools come with a wide range of effects and plugins and will support an even wider range of third-party plugins.īoth programs will enable you to record, edit and mix music without the limitations or quality issues of lower-level programs.Īnd that’s pretty much where the similarities end. Let’s look at the similarities and differences between Pro Tools and Ableton Live. Still, they take very different approaches to the work, and each DAW is better geared to certain aspects of recording and producing work than the other. ![]() The two programs each have a robust and powerful set of features, and they broadly overlap in terms of functionality. If there’s tension between software being robust and powerful versus being simple and easy to learn, both DAWs skew toward the former, not the latter. Pro Tools vs Ableton: Big Picture Overviewīoth Pro Tools and Ableton Live are serious tools designed for serious musicians and recording professionals. So in today’s post, we’ll help you demystify these two programs and decide which is better for what YOU want to do. ![]() If you’re new to the world of recording, even reading the feature sets for DAWs like Pro Tools or Ableton can be overwhelming. Both these DAWs are effective programs, but they work very differently and excel at different tasks. Pro Tools and Ableton are two widely-used DAWs that you may have heard about or come across. There are several pro-grade DAWs on the market today, each with its own focus and a unique set of strengths and weaknesses.Ī DAW is the software interface you’ll work in to record, edit and produce your music. ![]() To get started recording or producing music at home, one of the first and largest decisions to make is which digital audio workstation (DAW) you’ll use. ![]() Looking for an app with a wide variety of learning games? renshuu is about to be your new best friend. I was just playing with it and made this, and I painted the surface with any textures turned off to keep it smooth looking. I think it is around $20 to buy Hexagon 2.5, and it also has some brush tools so you can paint on colors and textures and even change the texture of the 3D charactor like z-brush, but that option does use up a lot of ram when you can paint image and texture maps at the same time. If you want to sculpt characters and creatures you might want to play with Z-brush.įor the price you would spend in a 3D modelling program I prefer Hexagon 2.5 because it can make anything very quickly and you might need to watch some videos online to see what you can do with the tools, and without the videos, everything i sjust as slow at making anything as major 3D modelling programs. I know Z-brush and it is better to have something ready to add details to the model. I added the smoke and sparkles in Photoshop.īlender can do anything but you need to know a lot to get anything out of it. This is the easier way to make anything you want in 3D. That is as far as I get besides moving the light and camera around.ĭaz Studio is easy to use, and Poser is kind of similar but it does a lot more, and no matter what 3D program I use I would rather make everything in Hexagon 2.5. I was just trying out blender and I didn't see where Renderman helped or what it does., and it seems like I would have a whole lot to read and experiment with to do much with that program, but what is easy is to import something I made in Hexagon ready to render. These are the programs I use and I can made a full 3D scene quickly and add a lot of details to it, and do anything from animating a model with her flowing hair and clothes, to scenes that can look very realistic that is not as hard as Blender. ![]() It is easier to make glass, but Poser is harder to make something look like glass. Then Poser can and joints and bend the model in animation, and it also does cloth drape and grow single strand hair the can look realistic and blow in the wind.ĭaz Studio can't do that but you can make changes to the materials and render with a lot of easy and preset lighting and even full scenes ready to render. Have you tried Daz Studio, because it has models ready to use and with Hexagon 2.5 you can make and animated things, but not like you can if you had Poser. (Way back it used to be it's own thing, but it wasn't long before the guy who made it was hired by the Z-brush team and stuff consolidated.) Then again, if you have the money to spend, I heard Z-brush can't be beat for that specific way of modeling. However Blender does have some really good tools for retopologizing sculpts. Keep in mind the sculpt mode workflow is quite different than the modeling. (MMB for nav, and F-key for brush settings.) Set the stylus rocker to middle mouse and F-key, and you'll only need to hover your other hand over shift for the majority of sculpting. I find the best workflow is if you setup custom settings for Blender in your tablet drivers. There's a few other options that aren't well explained, but they also come in handy. I'd also suggest making detail smaller than the default starting level, more like 8. It's only kept around because it's really fast and handy for some things like cell shading.) As for general sculpting, it's a matter of turning on dyntopo and changing shader to matcap. (Getting things to look good in the "Blender Internal" is wonky. ![]() Preview and setup is easier switching to the Cycles render engine mode. I've used it and I can recommend it.īlender does a lot of stuff, so it's not exactly focused on doing some things. It's super program and has a lot of guides out there. PS! Also Blender is very good software and one shouldn't think it lacks anything a home user would need for modelling in 3D. In reality those software's do different things and thus are not exclusive. 3D and 2D modes and then it's also officially even 2.5D program and many have not even heard what that means "to be in 2.5D" The difficulty of Zbrush is that it uses 2 modes. With 3D or 2.5D you are not taking any shortcuts and no program is easy to use. So to sum up you must ask from yourself what you want to achieve and pick tools based on that. Sculptris is like a Toddler sister of Zbrush, while Zbrush is a already a working adult. And you should take time to master its tools if you want to do top notch sculpts. ZBrush has very unique controls because of the nature of the software, but it's industry standard for a reason. It's like acting what you like more apples or bananas instead asking which brand of apple is best. And Blender is a 3D MODELLING program and Vue is another thing completely. Zbrush is a 3D and 2.5D program or sculpting program. 1st they are not even remotely same 'thing'. This provides enormous versatility allowing for superb editing and manipulation.ĪIFF ( Audio Interchange File Format) works identically: it provides studio-grade audio recording and playback. WAV files are also uncompressed, meaning that the data is stored as-is in full original format that doesn’t require decoding. So what gets captured and recorded is the closest mathematical/digital representation of the original audio waveform-no noticeable audio quality loss happens in the process. It’s a lossless file format, meaning that there is no data loss whatsoever. WAV uses PCM ( Pulse Code Modulation) to encode the data by slicing it into small chunks to provide the highest quality possible. WAV files capture and recreate an original audio waveform at the highest quality without affecting or altering the sonic characteristics of the sound in any way. Despite decades of progress, it still maintains its position as one of the world’s leading pro audio formats. WAV was one of the first digital audio formats, and quickly became a staple across all platforms. Waveform audio files (also called WAV files) are one of the more popular digital audio formats and a gold standard in studio recording. So let’s dive right into what the four standard audio formats are and when to use which one. With time, four contenders have become the golden standards you find everywhere today. New formats appear and disappear to solve different problems and offer varying benefits. What was once a single standardized audio format, quickly grew into a plethora of options.
